December 13, 1981

Sunday afternoon, December 13, 1981…mother calling to check on her very pregnant daughter so far away in Alabama and getting that “mother feeling”. Knowing what she needed to do for herself, she booked a flight for the next day arriving around lunch. Isn’t it amazing how a mother can sense situations? You see I, on the other hand and being selfish, wanted her to remain long after the birth rather than arriving long before the birth and leaving soon after.

Anyway, Glenn and I met mother at the Dothan Airport the next day and stopped by Pizza Hut for lunch. After lunch Glenn took us girls home for an afternoon of rest and girl “chit-chat”. Today was the first day of my maternity leave.

Spending an afternoon with mother was great. We made sure all was in order for the arrival of our little one. No, we didn’t have a clue as to the gender. Back then (get my walker), you didn’t have all these neat tests that are now so readily available to expectant mothers.

Our evening was enjoyable as we finished the day by playing cards (something my family loves to do). I was tired, left mom and Glenn at the kitchen table, retired for the evening for much needed rest. Little did I know that tonight would be my entrance into motherhood.

Making my way into the extra bedroom and crawling into bed with my mom having slight cramps (menstrual cramps prepared me greatly…); I knew there was no turning back now. (As if I could!) Within the hour, we awaken the “dad” to let him join in the festivities of waiting. What waiting? I had 3 hours at home and 3 hours at the hospital and then…….our little boy was born.

Today…he is 480 miles away and almost 28 years old. Levi…G…Allstar…G-Money… drumline…all names of Garrett, my son, who will celebrate his birthday with his grandparents in SC on Tuesday, December 15th.
