LANDER COLLEGE
In the Fall of 1973, I began college
classes. The college I chose was Lander College in Greenwood, SC. Lander was
172 miles from Bennettsville…a good three-hour drive.
It wasn’t until I chose to attend
Lander that I learned my maternal grandmother studied at Lander too. She attended
from 1909-1912.
Recently, I was in contact with David Mash with Lander University Archives concerning some Lander items of my grandmother.
With a bit of downsizing I am donating these items under my grandmother’s name.
They will make a wonderful addition to their memorabilia collection for Lander generations
to come.
The donated items are:
Two postcards...
The top postcard was sent to my great-grandmother dated September 29, 1909 after my grandmother arrived at Lander to study. If you look closely at the top right hand of the postcard, you will see where my grandmother circled the window and wrote..."This is my room."
The bottom postcard was sent to my grandmother's sister dated March 18, 1912 right before my grandmother's completion of her second of college. 
A 1930 calendar...
A picture of what I knew as Chipley Hall is at the top of the calendar. Attached is a blue cord with golden tassel...Lander's school colors.
A letter from John O. Willson, President of Lander College...
In the letter dated July 23, 1912 to my grandmother, President Willson suggests that my grandmother is making a mistake by stopping her college classes to begin teaching. He also thanks her for sending her sympathy over the death of Mrs. Frank Lander. He encloses a testimonial letter dated July 27, 1912 of my grandmother's studies and character for her to teach in public schools. The letter shows Lander's embossed seal - Lander College - Formerly Williamston Female College".
A letter from John O. Willson, President of Lander College...
In the letter dated August 22, 1912 to my grandmother, it appears my grandmother may have asked for funds to assist in her teaching. He explains that she evidently did not understand that funds of such matter were to be expended upon college expenses

These were used by my grandmother in her exercise classes at Lander.
Ready to close up the box and get in the mail. I am so happy to know that these Lander items will be added to the Lander University memorabilia collection. I know my grandmother would be happy too. One day I hope to travel back to Lander.
